A new social rehabilitation program for people undergoing treatment for drug addiction has begun to operate in Almaty, El.kz reports with reference to the Regional Communications Service.

The initiative is aimed at supporting former addicts in the process of adapting to society after undergoing medical rehabilitation.

As Roza Tatieva, deputy director of the Almaty Mental Health Center for Narcological Service, noted, treatment is only the first step. After leaving narcology, patients face many difficulties: lack of documents, loss of skills, distrust from society. This significantly increases the risk of recurrence if a person does not receive post-treatment support.

"It is important not only to help a person struggling with addiction, but also to give him a tool for further life," she said.

The program includes training in craft trades under the guidance of craftsmen and psychologists. Participants will be able to gain skills in such areas as carpentry, tailoring, arts and crafts. Working together helps to restore discipline, reduces anxiety and promotes socialization.

According to volunteer Zhanna Nurseitova, representing the Narkostop project, special attention is paid to the formation of new habits and the search for motivation for a life without addiction. Upon completion of the course, participants have employment opportunities.

According to the Center for Mental Health, from 500 to 800 people undergo rehabilitation in the city every year. Experts are confident that the expansion of social support programs will be an important step in reducing relapses and will help hundreds of people return to a full life.
