The Mazhilis adopted a new Water Code. The document reflects the instructions and tasks set by the Head of State to reform the water industry in terms of improving water legislation, strengthening the industry, regulating tariff policy and introducing water-saving technologies, El.kz reports citing the press service of the Mazhilis of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Code enshrines the concept of "environmental flow" - a certain volume of water that is not subject to withdrawal and must remain in water bodies for their conservation. Now the limits of water use for sectors of the economy will be calculated within the volume of water remaining after the determination of the ecological flow.

Rainwater and meltwater, treated wastewater, desalinated salt water will be considered as alternative sources of water.

According to the document, obtaining a permit for special water use will be the availability of a plan to reduce water losses and introduce water-saving technologies. In addition, the transition of subjects to a system of recycled or repeated water supply is envisaged. There is also a ban on subsoil use operations on surface water bodies, with the exception of exploration or production of hydrocarbons in the Caspian Sea.
