Kazakhstan to establish Scientific and Technical Innovation Center for Hydrogen Energy

RSE “National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, China Energy Overseas Investment Co., Ltd and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy, El.kz reports citing the Energy Ministry of Kazakhstan.

The parties agreed to establish the Scientific and Technical Innovation Center for Hydrogen Energy of Central Asia in the city of Kurchatov (Abai region). It will become an important scientific and technological platform where research, testing and implementation of advanced solutions in the field of hydrogen technologies will be carried out.

The project is aimed at developing international cooperation in the field of green energy, increasing Kazakhstan's competitiveness in the field of hydrogen technologies, training specialists, as well as implementing innovative projects in the energy sector.

"Hydrogen energy is one of the key areas of the global energy transition. Kazakhstan has significant potential in this area, and the creation of the center in Kurchatov will open up new opportunities for the development of science, technology and industry", Vice Energy Minister of Kazakhstan Bakytzhan Ilyas emphasized.

The project will be an important step in the implementation of Kazakhstan's strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies in the energy sector.

In the fall of 2024, a strategic document was approved - the Concept for the Development of Hydrogen Energy in the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2030.

According to it, the country seeks to fulfill international obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, achieve carbon neutrality and provide access to modern energy sources.
