Kazakhstan proposes new projects on hydrogen, AI and education to the EU

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took part in the Central Asia-European Union summit held in Samarkand, El.kz reports via Akorda.

In his address to the participants of the summit, the Head of State stressed that Kazakhstan is ready to increase exports to the EU countries on 175 commodity items worth over $2 bln. Today, the republic provides about 13% of the European Union's oil imports, a significant part of which passes through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. At the same time, Kazakhstan highly appreciates the EU's support for the stable and long-term operation of the CPC, while developing alternative routes for transporting raw materials.

Tokayev noted significant progress in the development of energy cooperation with European companies. Among the projects are joint initiatives with Total, Eni, Svevind and others on the production of green hydrogen and the development of renewable energy sources. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan have launched a transnational project to build a green energy transmission line across the Caspian Sea to the EU market.

Tokayev noted significant progress in the development of energy cooperation with European companies. The President also recalled that Kazakhstan produces 19 out of 34 types of strategically important raw materials for the EU economy, including uranium, lithium, titanium and other metals. Within the framework of the agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, work is underway to introduce sustainable technologies and modern approaches in geological exploration and mining. In 2024, the volume of container traffic along the Trans-Caspian route increased by 62%, amounting to 4.5 million tons. By 2027, it is planned to increase this figure to 10 million tons.

The Head of State also stressed the importance of technology development and digital transformation. At the beginning of the year, the International Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence was established under the President. At the same time, a program is being implemented to train 100 thousand IT specialists. A high-tech AlemAI center is being created in Astana. In this regard, the President proposed to create the Central Asia-EU Innovation Campus on the basis of Astana Hub.

In the field of education and science, Tokayev took the initiative to create a Regional Research Center for Rare Earth Metals. It was also proposed to develop an educational program "Erasmus+ for Central Asia" with an emphasis on training specialists in the field of artificial intelligence, water resources and biotechnology.

Touching upon the international agenda, the President called on all countries to show responsibility in the context of global instability. He stressed the need to respect the UN Charter and support the efforts of Secretary-General António Guterres. This is of particular importance in the context of the 80th anniversary of the UN. Kazakhstan, according to Tokayev, invariably advocates the peaceful resolution of conflicts and welcomes the start of negotiations on Ukraine, expressing hope for a positive outcome.
