In accordance with the Head of State's instruction, voiced during the National Kurultai in the city of Atyrau, 23 April was proclaimed the National Book Day, El.kz reports with reference to the Advisor to President – Press Secretary of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Ruslan Zheldibay.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated citizens on the first date in the history of the country dedicated to the book and the culture of reading. The congratulation emphasizes the special role of the book in the formation of progressive thinking and the intellectual potential of society:

"Congratulations on the National Book Day, which is celebrated for the first time this year! This holiday symbolizes the desire for knowledge and love of reading. Through reading, young people gain the ability to think big and progressive. It is these values that form a new quality of the nation," the President said.

The idea of establishing the National Book Day is aimed at popularizing reading among young people, strengthening cultural identity and supporting domestic writers and publishers. The holiday is also timed to coincide with World Book and Copyright Day, which is celebrated annually on April 23 under the auspices of UNESCO.

Thematic events are held in different regions of Kazakhstan on this day: book fairs, meetings with authors, book exchange campaigns, presentations of literary projects, readings aloud and lectures on the importance of literature in society.
