Kazakhstan assumes presidency of conference on disarmament

The Republic of Kazakhstan has officially assumed the Presidency in the Conference on Disarmament, El.kz cites Kazakh FM.

Opening the plenary session, with the attendance of Director General of UN Office in Geneva, Secretary General of the Conference on Disarmament Tatiana Valovaya, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan Yerlan Alimbayev reaffirmed his commitment to lead efforts to advance the work of the Conference in a transparent and inclusive manner. He emphasized Kazakhstan’s dedication to upholding the principles of multilateralism and cooperation in addressing global security challenges.

The work of this year’s Conference will be centered on the Subsidiary Bodies fostering substantive discussions on pressing global security issues, such as nuclear disarmament, preventing nuclear war, negative security assurances, preventing arms race in outer space, as well as challenges related to the use of AI in military domain and biological security. In this context, the discussion of the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to create an International Agency for Biological Safety and Security is of importance.

During Kazakhstan’s presidency, a total of eight meetings of the four Subsidiary Bodies will take place, divided between March and May this year.

Kazakhstan looks forward to engaging with all delegations and stakeholders to drive meaningful outcomes in the spirit of compromise and consensus.
