Kazakh scientists to study snow leopards using neural network
The Institute of Zoology, together with Yandex Qazaqstan, students of the Kazakh-British Technical University and the Snow Leopard Foundation, trained the neural network to recognize snow leopards in detail, El.kz reports.
The neural network recognizes specific individuals by the pattern on the fur, size, length of limbs and other distinguishing features. It is capable of processing up to 8 million images in less than an hour, which significantly speeds up data analysis.
"As part of the implementation of this project, we discovered a population of 20 previously unseen snow leopards in the Altyn-Emel National Park. We are proud that we were able to save another population, because now it will be much better protected." Alexey Grachev, head of the laboratory at the Institute of Zoology comments.
