Kazakh Ministry of Energy and EBRD to strengthen cooperation in "green" energy

Energy Minister of Kazakhstan Yerlan Akkenzhenov met with the Hussein Ozkhan, the Acting Managing Director of the European Bank and Managing Director of the Sustainable Infrastructure Group Harry Boyd-Carpenter, El.kz reports citing the press service of the Ministry of Energy.
The sides discussed the important areas of cooperation aimed at improving the reliability of energy supply and ensuring a fair energy transition.
The Ministry of Energy and the EBRD focused on priority projects for the stability of the energy system.
The key point was the discussion of the National Project for the Modernization of the Energy and Utilities Sectors. The parties considered attracting significant investments necessary to upgrade the critical infrastructure for the transmission of electricity and heat in a number of regions (including Karaganda, Turkestan, Almaty, Mangystau, Pavlodar regions) for the period 2025-2029.
Substantive negotiations are underway with regional operators with the participation of the EBRD on financing mechanisms that ensure transparency and efficiency in the use of funds.
Another important focus is to increase the stability of "green" generation. Based on successful experience, the parties agreed to jointly prepare sites for the first wind farms with energy storage systems in Kazakhstan.
In the context of the global climate agenda and Kazakhstan's commitments to achieve carbon neutrality, the parties discussed mechanisms for a fair energy transition. The EBRD expressed its readiness to support this process.
"Partnership with the EBRD means access to the best international practices and standards of project management. We are aimed at making the most effective use of these opportunities to solve the systemic problems of Kazakhstan's energy sector and ensure its sustainable development," Yerlan Akkenzhenov said.
EBRD representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Kazakhstan in achieving its energy and climate goals, noting the importance of the environment being created in the country for long-term investments in sustainable infrastructure.
