Under the chairmanship of the 8th UN Secretary-General and Chair of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Ban Ki-moon, the 13th Assembly and the 17th Joint Council Session of the GGGI took place. The event was attended by delegations from member states, including representatives from Kazakhstan, El.kz cites MFA.

Speaking as the head of the Kazakh delegation, Ambassador Nurgali Arystanov highlighted the successful development of cooperation between Kazakhstan and GGGI in the field of green economy. The Kazakh diplomat emphasized that green economy issues are gaining increasing importance in bilateral relations. He informed the participants that topics of green technology usage were actively discussed during bilateral contacts, including during the visit of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to Kazakhstan in June 2024 and the visit of Speaker of the Korean National Assembly Woo Won-shik in October 2024.

Ambassador Arystanov noted that in February 2023, Kazakhstan approved the Strategy for Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2060. The emissions trading system already covers 43% of the country’s emissions, which has helped reduce them by 13% compared to 1990 levels. From 2025, the country plans to implement advanced technologies at industrial enterprises, and the Green Taxonomy will be used to assess environmental projects.

Additionally, the Ambassador highlighted the concrete projects being implemented between the two countries in the field of green economy, including cooperation with South Korean companies on the construction of waste processing plants and the modernization of energy facilities.

It should be noted that Kazakhstan has been a member of GGGI since December 2022. Under GGGI’s framework, the Kazakhstan Methane Gas Flaring Optimization Project is being implemented. Another successful example of cooperation is the project for planting saxaul trees on the dried bed of the Aral Sea, carried out jointly with the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO).
