About 10 thousand foreign delegates to arrive in Astana for SCO Summit
Aliya Musabekova, the leading expert of the Asian Studies Department of the KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, spoke about Kazakhstan's SCO Chairmanship and the purpose of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, El.kz reports.
Kazakhstan's SCO Chairmanship
- Kazakhstan assumed the SCO chairmanship in July 2023. Throughout the year, over 100 events were held, including energy and digital forums. The summit is the final event at which the results of this year will be summed up.
It is expected that about 20 documents will be adopted at the summit, which were agreed with the member countries of the organization during the year. These are quite interesting and significant documents. The most important of them is the Astana Declaration, which will reaffirm the principles and positions of the SCO on current international crises and trends. The SCO initiative "On World Unity for Just Peace and Harmony" proposed by the Head of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will be adopted. And the main task is to prevent a geopolitical fault between East and West.
The summit will adopt documents on a wide range of cooperation – in the economy, trade, energy, the fight against terrorism.
Achievements of Kazakhstan as chair of SCO
- For Kazakhstan, the chairmanship of the Organization is, first of all, a great responsibility. The burden on the country, on its departments, on the organizing committee, which is engaged in carrying out all events, is increasing. The advantage for Kazakhstan is that it can promote its position on the SCO platform.
We aim to strengthen international security. Now we live in a geopolitical environment when it is important for us to ensure sustainable development, both within the country and externally. In this regard, the SCO is a suitable platform for reaffirming its positions, so that we can proactively talk about peacekeeping, about the need to comply with the principles of international law.
Active participation in the SCO and the formation of the summit agenda helps us to manifest and promote this initiative and show that this is our initiative, that it is our President who declares this, and allows us to make predictable the processes taking place around us on the vast Eurasian continent.
Holding events within the framework of the SCO and, above all, the summit itself attract tourists. People come to Almaty and see what a beautiful city it is. As we were informed, about 10 thousand foreign delegates will arrive in Astana during the summit. This is a great burden for the hotel business and urban infrastructure, but, at the same time, it is a kind of test of strength and incentive, motivation to improve conditions and service.
