Water audit is key to sustainable future, Alikhan Smailov at meeting of SCO countries

Chairman of the Supreme Audit Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov took part in the 7th Meeting of the Heads of Supreme Audit Institutions of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries, held in Dushanbe, El.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Supreme Audit Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan .

The meeting focused on the issues related to increasing the efficiency of water resources use through enhanced state control. The representatives of audit structures from nine SCO member countries, as well as the Secretariat of the organization attended the event.

Speaking at the main session, Smailov noted that rational use of water and pollution of water bodies are becoming more and more relevant for the states of the region.

"For Kazakhstan, the priority remains the introduction of advanced water-saving technologies and the reform of the water sector. The Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed the importance of comprehensive measures in this area," Alikhan Smailov said.

He added that in recent years, audits of the state of water resources have been carried out in the Republic of Kazakhstan, as a result of which a number of measures have been implemented: certification of water facilities, inventory of the water fund, development of risk assessment criteria, introduction of checklists.

Smailov also stressed the need to increase transparency in budget spending, develop international cooperation on transboundary water bodies and introduce innovative water purification technologies.

Following the meeting, a Joint Statement and an Action Plan for 2025–2027 were approved. The Supreme Audit Institutions of Belarus and Iran are officially included in the ranks of the SCO.
