Kazakhstan takes part in EU conference on disarmament and non-proliferation issues

First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Akan Rakhmetullin participated in the European Union Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation,El.kz cites MFA.

The Conference was also attended by high-level representatives of the European External Action Service, the European Commission, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France and other countries, as well as the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, the UN Institute for Disarmament Research, the Vienna Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, the IAEA, CTBTO, leading scientific, educational institutions and international think tanks.

In his report as Chairman of the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference, Rakhmetullin noted that, despite the existing challenges, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) remains the fundamental and universal mechanism for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as the key forum for discussing these issues. He noted that the integrity of the Treaty is vital to ensuring global peace and security.

Expressing the hope that a responsible and collective approach would be maintained in the work of the final Preparatory Committee next year, the Kazakh diplomat emphasized that this would set the stage for a successful 2026 NPT Review Conference, where concrete and substantive recommendations are expected to be adopted.

The conference participants noted the solid international legal framework in the field of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, and emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles of multilateralism and maintaining constant dialogue.
