Kazakhstan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation discuss with China the important issue of water distribution in more than 20 rivers, including three major transboundary rivers Yertys, Ili and Emel, El.kz reports.
According to the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, progress has already been made on a number of articles of the agreement. "This is an important step in strengthening cooperation and sustainable management of water resources, which is especially important in the context of climate change and growing water scarcity," the minister said.
Particular attention is paid to joint hydraulic engineering projects. For example, on the Khorgos River, which separates the two states, there is a jointly built hydraulic facility. "This facility is an example of an innovative approach that ensures equal distribution of water between countries," Nurzhigitov stressed.
Similar mechanisms have already been implemented on other rivers, for example, on the Sumba, and are planned on the Ulken Ulasty in the East Kazakhstan region.
These negotiations are part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainable water management in the region, where water is a key resource for agriculture, industry and the lives of millions of people.
