A 22-year-old Kazakh citizen is suspected of involvement in the activities of one of the international terrorist groups in Syria, El.kz reports citing the National Security Committee. The young man was deported from Istanbul to Kazakhstan on January 27.
According to preliminary information from the investigation, the suspect, who is a native of the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan, went to Syria in 2020 with the aim of joining one of the local armed groups.
The operation to detain and extradite the young man was carried out by the NSC in cooperation with the Turkish authorities, with the active support of the Prosecutor General's Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The press service of the NSC reported that a criminal case was initiated against the suspect under the article related to participation in terrorist activities provided for by the Criminal Code of the country.
