At the initiative of Kazakhstan and Kiribati, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly First Committee a resolution entitled “Addressing the Legacy of Nuclear Weapons: Providing Victim Assistance and Environmental Restoration to States Affected by the Use or Testing of Nuclear Weapons” was adopted, El.kz cites MFA.
An overwhelming number of UN member states expressed their strong support for the resolution.
The initiative of Kazakhstan and Kiribati, affected by the consequences of nuclear tests, is aimed at creating a universal international legal framework in the form of a UN General Assembly resolution to ensure international cooperation and assistance in eliminating damage to states on whose territory nuclear weapons tests were carried out.
The resolution also encourages the assessments of the extent of damage and the needs of practical and financial assistance for the rehabilitation of areas contaminated by radiation (land and water surfaces).
