Today, February 27, is the World NGO Day established to recognize the contribution of non-profit organizations to social development, the protection of citizens' rights and humanitarian aid, El.kz reports.

The idea of creating this holiday was proposed in 2010 the IX Baltic Sea NGO Forum. It was initiated by Marcis Skadmanis who realized the key role of non-governmental organizations in civil society.

Two years later, in 2012, the Council of the Baltic Sea States officially approved the date of February 27, and it was subsequently supported by the UN and the European Union.

Currently, over 10 million non-governmental and non-profit organizations are registered in the world. They are engaged in the protection of human rights, environmental protection, charity, cultural initiatives, social support of the population and many other important tasks.

Traditionally, on this day, forums, conferences and exhibitions dedicated to the activities of NGOs are held. The events are attended by government officials, state leaders, ministers and international experts.

They discuss the achievements and prospects for the development of civil initiatives, as well as the role of NGOs in solving global problems.
