A great number of people representing different ethnic communities live in Kazakhstan and were born here; they have devoted their lives to this country solely and never fail to glorify it. Today’s youth plays a special role among them. In this respect, Denis Ten, the bronze medal  awardee of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, a representative of the Korean community of whom the entire Kazakhstan is proud, should be mentioned. He was the one who won our first Olympic prize in figure skating.

Denis has been doing sports since he was a child. Acrobatics, dancing class, swimming, taekwondo, and tennis have been his hobbies. Besides, he used to attend painting classes and a music school. Figure skating was one of his numerous passions. The young music lover would take part and win in all kinds of international competitions. He studied piano at the music school. His mother’s care and upbringing have influenced him greatly. Denis’s mother is a musician too – she took conservatory violin classes. She is said to consult Denis on music for his figure skating events.

Denis Ten, whose childhood dream was to be an artist or a film director, could not have even thought of having an athletic career. As Denis grew up, he came to choose the toughest sports, that is, figure skating, to win global glory for his country.

During the 21st Session of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, which took place in the Astana Palace of Peace and Concord and was called “Kazakhstan-2050: The Culture of Peace, Spiritual Harmony, and Concord”, the Head of State Nursultan  Nazarbayev awarded he young athlete with the Kurmet Order to indicate gratefulness, admiration, and people’s joy.

Denis Ten made the entire Kazakh nation as well as sport lovers from all around the globe happy by performing in Almaty in late May and in Astana in early June. The world’s best skaters took part in the show. Some of them were the Sochi Olympics bronze medal awardee Denis Ten, World and European Champions,  and Olympic prize winners. The number of fans and guests who came from all around the world was well above 300. Most of them came from Japan, China, and South Korea. The participant list included 9 Olympic medal awardees, 13 World Championship winners and awardees, and 19 world famous athletes.

Such Olympic Champions as Aleksey Yagudin, Evana Lasachek, Maksim Marinin, Tatyana Totmyanina, Maksim Trankov, and Tatyana Volosozhar shared their skills and enthusiasm.   Multiple World Champions and  Olympic medal awardees, such as  Mao Asada, Daisuke Takahasi, Joannie Rochette, Stephane Lambiel, and  the pair of Nathalie Péchalat and Fabian Bourzat impressed the spectators greatly. A Kazakh national costume show was the highlight of the event. World figure skating stars along with Denis Ten, who initiated the whole event, performed to a national musical composition. The moment brought special emotions to the guests and spectators.

An interview with Denis Ten consists the following question, “Do you get propositions to represent a different country, to change your nationality?”. Denis’s answer was, “Of course I do, but I neglect them. Because I am a patriot. I love Kazakhstan and the unique mentality of our people.  I am proud of my young Republic’s accomplishments.” The event arranged by Denis Ten this year is another evidence of his being truly patriotic.
